Sarah Deborah Locke was born on May 23, 1836 in Ashburnham, Massachusetts to William and Marinda Adams Locke. She graduated from Mount Holyoke Seminary in 1859, and taught there until 1868. On April 7, 1868 she married Reverend John Murdock Stow. He died in 1877, and Sarah Stowe returned to Mount Holyoke in 1878 to teach. She retired in 1889.
